Book synopsis

Set in Alabama in the 1980s, Family Law follows Lucia, an ambitious lawyer who’s made a name for herself in a time when a woman in a courtroom is still a rarity. One of only two women in her law school class, Lucia has had to fight tooth and nail for her career, battling misogyny and harassment along the way. Now she helps her female clients to do the same, working on domestic abuse cases, messy divorces, and custody battles. When she meets Rachel, the teenage daughter of a potential client, an unlikely friendship is born – and Lucia, somewhat inadvertently, becomes a feminist role model to a young girl trying to find her place in the world.

For Rachel, Lucia’s carefully crafted life proves there are different ways of being a woman in the world than what she’s been taught. From her hot pink fingernails to her love of movies to her outspoken nature, Lucia is the polar opposite of Rachel’s mother, who preaches tradition and rules like Never sleep on your face because you’ll get wrinkles.

But Lucia’s prominence and her work on complicated cases have put a target on her back. When threats against her start to put Rachel in danger, she must decide what’s more important: the safety of those she cares about or the rights she’s spent her life fighting for. The story alternates between Lucia and Rachel’s perspectives, two funny, strong female leads – one trying to protect the life she’s built, and the other eager to carve out a different future than what she’s been promised.
