Local Author Event: Carter Heyward - She Files On

She Flies On combines personal memoir with social, political, and theological reflection on the first 70 years of my life, work, values, and commitments.  Written in 2015 as a means of wrestling with spiritual and moral questions as I approached my 70th birthday, the book was meant to elicit more questions than produce answers to many of the most pressing social and political questions of our time — and to many spiritual and moral questions that transcend particular times and places.

Author Bio:

A native of Charlotte (born in 1945), I was one of the first women ordained an Episcopal priest — in a controversial 1974 service in Philadelphia — prior to the church’s authorization of women’s ordination.

I taught theology at the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge MA for 30 years, have written 12 books and edited several more. I continue to preach, speak, and lead workshops on feminist liberation theology, anti-racism, gender and sexual justice, and other matters of justice and peace in the United States and around the world.

I retired in Brevard, where I founded Free Rein Center for Therapeutic Riding and Education and currently serve as Vice President of the local NAACP.
