Once upon a time throughout the Carolina Piedmont there existed a string of textile mills employing close to half a million.  “A mill a mile,” the Southern Railway advertized. Now most are either demolished, standing empty, or put to other uses.  And Then They Stood presents a collection of B&W photographs of old mills together with essays on the roles of energy and labor in the history of the industry.
